Irish co-pro ‘Return to Montauk’ begins shooting in New York
06 May 2016 : Seán Brosnan
‘Return to Montauk’, a film co-written by ‘Brooklyn’ author Colm Tóibín and co-produced by Conor Barry of Savage Productions, has begun principal photography in Long Island, New York.

The film, which is co-funded by the IFB, is being helmed by Oscar winning director Volker Schlondorff (‘The Tin Drum’) and stars Stellan Skarsgard and Nina Hoss. Schlondorff also co-wrote the script with Toíbín.

The cast also includes Irish actress Bronagh Gallagher (‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘The Commitments’) and will also shoot in Berlin when it wraps in New York.

The film tells the story of Max (Skarsgard), a married writer who goes to New York to promote his new novel, where he meets Rebecca (Hoss), with the two spending the weekend together in Montauk.

Gaumont is handling international sales in Cannes (starting next week) with Wild Bunch Germany will release the film theatrically in Germany.

Aside from being co-produced by Conor Barry of Savage, the film is produced by Regina Ziegler of Ziegler Film and Schlondorff, and it is co-produced by Francis Boesplug for Pyramid Productions and Gaumont in France, in association with Mike Downey and Sam Taylor at Film & Music Entertainment of the U.K. Other co-producers include Til Schweiger and Tom Zickler of Barefoot Films, Christoph Liedke and Marc Gabizon of Wild Bunch, and the broadcasters WDR BR and ARTE. It is funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, FFA, DFFF, Eurimages, Irish Film Board and CNC.

The film is expected to hit cinemas sometime next year.
