‘Sacred Sites’
News from MIPTV where the Smithsonian Channel has greenlit a 4K UHD documentary series on sacred places, to be produced by Ireland’s Tile Films, a producer of creative documentaries and specialist factual content.

‘Sacred Sites’ is scheduled to broadcast on Smithsonian Channel in September 2016. International distribution is being handled by Off the Fence on behalf of Smithsonian Channel and Tile Films.

Founded by Stephen Rooke in 1989, Tile Films has produced a number of projects for Smithsonian Channel, including ‘Fighting Irish of the Civil War’, ‘Cromwell: God’s Executioner’, ‘Decoding Christianity’, ‘The Lost Gods’ and ‘The Ghosts of Duffy’s Cut’.

Based on new scientific breakthroughs and archaeological and historical research, ‘Sacred Sites’ will offer unique insights into some of the world’s most hallowed shrines, temples and monuments. The pilot episode, “Sacred Sites: Ireland”, explored a new theory on how comets and meteors influenced religious sites in ancient Ireland. The show received an Award of Distinction at the 2015 Global Film Awards in the United States.

The ‘Sacred Sites’ series will include five additional episodes. Episodes will cover the oracles of Ancient Greece; new discoveries in Egyptian tombs; the secrets of the Knights Templar; the ruins of Chaco Canyon; and the ancient ruins of Petra.

David Royle, Executive Vice President, Programming and Production at Smithsonian Channel, said: “This series tells fascinating stories at the same time as revealing astonishing landscapes in a way that really showcases the unbelievable visual richness that can be achieved with 4K. Viewers will get a new perspective on these sacred places and what they mean.”

The series was developed by Tile Films’ Head of Development, David Ryan, and is being directed and produced by multi award-winning film-maker Stephen Rooke. “New scientific and archaeological research is always adding to our knowledge of these sacred places,”, Stephen said. “This has given us real motivation to make this series, and we are delighted to be working with the Smithsonian Channel again to produce this.”

Rooke went on to state that Tile Films is grateful for the support of Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government trade agency, which has assisted the producer’s participation at MIPTV. “I’ve been to many MIPTV and MIPCOM festivals,” Stephen Rooke says. “And I've always found these markets to be really fruitful in terms of forging partnerships with broadcasters, co-producers and distributors.”
