Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, Oscar nominated for her role in John Crowley’s ‘Brooklyn’, has been cast as the lead in ‘On Chesil Beach’ based on the 2007 novel by Ian McEwan.
Ronan will play the lead role of Florence in the film which tells the story of a young married couple from drastically different backgrounds who both reflect upon their upbringing and the prospect of their futures during the course of one evening.
‘On Chesil Beach’ is expected to shoot in autumn of this year and will be directed by Dominic Cooke (‘The Hollow Crown’). The picture will be produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley of Number 9 Films, the same team behind Oscar nominated films ‘Carol’ and ‘Youth’.
This is the second time Ronan has been cast in a film based on an Ian McEwan novel. The first film was ‘Atonement’ in 2007, directed by Joe Wright, which saw Ronan (then 13 years of age) garner an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Saoirse has also recently been cast in Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut ‘Lady Bird’ and will be seen shortly making her Broadway debut in ‘The Crucible’.
The Academy Awards ceremony take place on February 28th with Saoirse nominated for Best Actress for ‘Brooklyn’, which is also up for Best Picture.
