Documentary asking ‘Who Is Dervla Murphy’ to open in Irish cinemas on April 23rd
08 Feb 2016 : Seán Brosnan
‘Who Is Dervla Murphy’
Mixed Bag Media documentary ‘Who Is Dervla Murphy’, which looks at the life of the titular travel writer, will open in Irish cinemas from April 23rd.

This extended edition feature documentary, released fifty years after her first book ‘Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle’, features previously unseen footage and new contributions from actor/presenter Michael Palin.

Dervla Murphy is an Irish touring cyclist and author of adventure travel books for over 40 years and is best known for her 1965 book Full Tilt: Ireland to India With a Bicycle, about an overland cycling trip through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. She followed this with volunteer work helping Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal and trekking with a mule through Ethiopia. Murphy took a break from travel writing following the birth of her daughter, and then wrote about her travels with Rachel in India, Pakistan, South America, Madagascar and Cameroon. She later wrote about her solo trips through Romania, Africa, Laos, the states of the former Yugoslavia and Siberia. In 2005 she visited Cuba with her daughter and three granddaughters. Murphy has normally travelled alone and unaided, without luxuries and depending on the hospitality of local people.

This award winning documentary has screened in film festivals which include the Cork International Film Festival, Rhode Island, Banff, Galway Film Fleadh, Chicago plus many more. Produced independently by husband and wife team, Garret Daly and Martina McGlynn, the project was assisted in post-production by County Waterford Arts Office.

“A shorter version of the film began a festival run a few years ago, but we never released it publicly”, commented Garret Daly. “When the fifty year anniversary of Full Tilt came around we thought its worth celebrating this extraordinary talent in some way. And when Michael Palin, a huge fan of hers agreed to appear in the film, it brought us back to the edit suite to remaster an extended edition.”

Martina McGlynn also added that “the film has played so well on the big screen that watching this film in the cinema feels like spending an evening with Dervla. We were privileged to be given this window into her life.”

‘Who Is Dervla Murphy’ includes rare footage of Dervla’s family home in Lismore and interviews with her daughter Rachel, publisher John Murray, actor/presenter Michael Palin and broadcaster and travel writer Manchan Magan.

In 2014, Daly and McGlynn produced and directed the award winning War of Independence set drama ‘A Nightingale Falling’. The low-budget period film has sold in a number of territories following its six week run at the Irish box office and received an IFTA nomination for lead actress Tara Breathnach. Their new project is a fiction comedy based on the true story of Noel Murray and Keith Byrne, two boys from Darndale, that ended up in New York as stowaways in 1985. This is currently in development with the Irish Film Board.

‘Who is Dervla Murphy?’ is produced by Mixed Bag Media in association with County Waterford Arts Office and is directed and produced by Garret Daly and Martina McGlynn. The film opens in Movies@Dundrum and SGC Dungarvan on April 23rd. Check out the trailer below:
