CAO: Eye on UCC
27 Jan 2016 : Seán Brosnan
With the CAO deadline looming (February 1st), IFTN has scoured some of the film and television courses Ireland has to offer for prospective students.

Here, we talk to Barry Reilly from UCC about what his college has to offer.

What film and television courses do UCC have in the CAO?

Here at UCC we have the BA in Film and Screen Media (CK105) on offer to CAO applicants. This unique major degree programme innovatively combines the study of film and of screen media (Internet, mobile social media, e-publishing) and practical filmmaking modules and workshops in digital filmmaking and in writing for the screen.

What do you think makes UCC unique for prospective students?

UCC’s BA in Film and Screen Media is led by internationally recognised academic experts; students also make films under the guidance of experienced practitioners, including a Film Artist in Residence, and avail of professionalising opportunities provided by the programme's partnership with film festivals such as the Cork Film Festival and Schull's Fastnet Short Film Festival. Film and Screen Media at UCC is a vibrant community of lecturers, researchers and graduate students; it publishes Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media and regularly organises talks by filmmakers and scholars, masterclasses with professionals, conferences and workshops. Staff are passionately committed to education and to innovation. Cork hosts a lively community of filmmakers, and the city and region are home to a number of local, national and international film festivals, with which the Discipline has forged important links.

How do you prepare students for working in the industry?

The BA is a unique, specialised programme that responds to the growing need for a specific education capable of preparing students for the challenges of our society and of our evolving technologies. It aims to equip students with advanced levels of audiovisual literacy and a comprehensive knowledge of Film Studies and Screen Media (encompassing Internet, mobile social media, computer games). It offers an education in the history, aesthetic and cultural values of the moving image in all its forms, and combines it with a practical knowledge of making digital films and digital media. Through training that exposes them to both theoretical and practical elements of teaching and learning, and to a range of forms of assessment—including essay writing, oral presentations with technological support, portfolios and practical projects—students will also attain a set of skills that will prepare them for further education and aid them in various career paths (film industry, TV and media, internet, creative industries, journalism, e-publishing).

Notable Alumni?

The BA in Film and Screen Media is a new degree, currently in the last year of its first cycle. Shaun O’Connor, filmmaker, graduated from the UCC MA in Film Studies in 2006.
