Wildcard Distribution has acquired the rights to the Irish-Australian outback thriller ‘Strangerland’ starring Academy Award winning actress Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving with an Irish cinema release set for February 5th, 2016.
The co-production which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year sees the Parker family, new to the remote desert town of Nathgari thrown into crisis when Catherine (Kidman) and Matthew (Fiennes) discover that their two teenage kids have mysteriously disappeared just before a massive dust storm hits the town. With the town now eerily smothered in red dust and darkness, the locals join the search led by local cop David Rae (Weaving). But scorching temperatures mean the chances of survival are plummeting with each passing day and Catherine and Matthew find themselves pushed to the brink as they struggle to survive the uncertainty of their children’s fate.
Written by Irish screenwriter Michael Kinirons together with Fiona Seres, ‘Strangerland’ is the directorial debut of Australian Kim Farrant.
Produced by Macdara Kelleher from Fastnet Films – with partial funding from the Irish Film Board - and comprising of a crew including cinematographer PJ Dillon, sound recordist Rob Flanagan, and photographer Ross McDonnell, ‘Strangerland’ premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition of the Sundance Film Festival and also played at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year.
