Gary Lennon’s film had a successful opening weekend and will now expand to more theatres
Gary Lennon’s feature documentary ‘A Doctor’s Sword’ has been expanded to more theatres following a successful opening weekend.

Distributed by Wildcard Distribution, the film ended up achieving the highest screen average of any new release and the second highest screen average overall after ‘Inside Out’.

Following this successful opening weekend in the Irish Film Institute in Dublin and the Omniplex in Cork the documentary will now expand to more cinemas this weekend including Cinemax Bantry, the Triskel in Cork and Omniplex in Limerick. The film’s producer Bob Jackson will be attending the opening night screening in Cinemax Bantry this Friday and will take part in a post screening Q&A.

‘A Doctor’s Sword’ tells the story of Aidan MacCarthy, a young doctor from West Cork who survived some of the most harrowing episodes of World War II (including the atomic bombing of Nagasaki) and his family’s search to uncover the origin of the Japanese Samurai sword, which now resides in MacCarthy’s Bar in Castletownbere.

‘A Doctor’s Sword’ screened at the Cork Film Festival last November to a sold-out crowd, prompting a second screening. It also screened at the 2015 Galway Film Fleadh before being picked up by Wildcard Distribution for theatrical release.

The film was produced by Bob Jackson with funding from BAI, IFB, UCC, Cork City Council and Cork County Council Arts Office.
