Production Design Symposium to be held at IADT (12-13 March)
11 Mar 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Alex McDowell will kick off the event on March 12th with a keynote address
Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) are to host a Production Design Symposium on Thursday, 12 March and Friday, 13 March.

The bespoke event will be held for GEECT, the European regional section of CILECT (the International Association of Film & Television Schools) and will be held on the IADT campus.

Opening the symposium on Thursday, 12 March, will be a keynote address from Alex McDowell. As a production designer, his credits include: ‘Man of Steel’, ‘Watchmen’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ (which garnered him a BAFTA nomination), ‘The Terminal’, ‘Minority Report’ and ‘Fight Club’.

McDowell is also the founder and creative director of 5D Global Studios, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and the SciTech Council, and last year was appointed to the William Cameron Menzies Chair of Production Design (endowed by George Lucas) at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

In addition to this, 45 delegates are slated to attend the event, many of whom will participate in discussions, panels and seminars about the importance of production design and how they teach the discipline in their own film schools. IADT has stated that they have registrations in from about 30 film schools from 20 countries – which include Russia, Portugal, Denmark, Croatia, France and the Czech Republic.

The majority of these are practising production designers at the very highest level: Uli Hanisch of the International Film School, Cologne, who won a European Film Academy Award for ‘Perfume’ and an Art Directors Guild nomination for ‘Cloud Atlas’; Jean-Vincent Puzos from La Fémis in Paris who designed ‘Amour’ as well as ‘The Cat’s Meouw’ with Peter Bogdanovich; and Jette Lehmann from the Danish National Film School, who won a EFA Award for ‘Melancholia’ and designed all four series of ‘The Killing’.

Irish Production Designer Tom Conroy will also be chairing a session about Production Design and VFX. Conroy has won a Primetime Emmy Award and an IFTA Award for his work on ‘The Tudors’, as well as winning an IFTA Award last year for his work on ‘Vikings’.

The symposium is funded by GEECT, CILECT, NAHEMI, Irish Design 2015, The Irish Film Board and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
