UTV Ireland Gets Public Service Status
03 Dec 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Forthcoming channel UTV Ireland has been granted public service status and has signed numerous carriage deals.

The Minister for Communications, Alex White, T.D., signed the order designating the new UTV Ireland television service for carriage on Saorview. The designation was made following a determination that UTV Ireland “is a television service having the character of a public service.” The designation was made under the Broadcasting Act 2009.

UTV Ireland has reached agreement for carriage on Sky, UPC and eVision as well as on Saorview. The new television channel will be available on Sky channel 116, UPC channel 110, and eVision channel 108, while the Saorview channel number will be allocated shortly.

John McCann, Group Chief Executive, UTV Media plc said: “We welcome today’s announcement by Minster White, which reflects our commitment to providing Irish viewers with high quality public service programming.

“Today’s decision represents a major milestone in UTV Ireland’s short history, as this designation was important for the purposes of ensuring appropriate prominence for UTV Ireland, on the various platforms, allowing us to offer Irish viewers an increased choice of high quality content. I am delighted that we have now reached agreements with all platform providers and UTV Ireland will be universally available across the country.

“UTV has had a strong broadcasting presence in Ireland for over 55 years. We now look forward to further strengthening our presence in Irish public life, through UTV Ireland, in the years ahead.”

UTV Ireland will launch in 29 days on 1st January 2015.
