Four-Part TG4 Documentary ‘Seachtain Na Rásaí’ begins on Sunday, 30th November
28 Nov 2014 : Seán Brosnan
A specially commissioned four-part documentary series for TG4 entitled ‘Seachtain Na Rásaí’, providing a unique insight into the seven-day 2014 Galway Races, will be shown on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas.

The first episode will air on Sunday, 30th November at 9.30pm and each episode will be repeated on the following Monday evening at 7.30pm. ‘Seachtain Na Rásaí’ has been produced by Touchline Media and directed by Luke McManus, the team behind the Channel 4 and TG4 ‘Jump Boys’ and ‘Arkle’ documentaries.

'Seachtain Na Rásaí' was shot by Peter Moffett and Reamonn Mac Donnacha. DV Directors on the project were Colm Bairéad and Tomás Seoige. Áine Ní hÉalaí researched the project.

The series was edited by Eoin McDonagh at Highwire in Dublin 2. Mark Quinn at Highwire did the colour grade. Sound recordists were Tomás O Neachtain, Sean Reynolds, Stephen McLoughlin and Trevor McKenna. The sound mix was by Killian Fitzgerald at Avatar Post and Seachtain Na Rásaí is narrated by Tom Sullivan. Prionsias Ní Ghráinne was the commissioning editor for TG4 who funded the project.

‘Seachtain Na Rásaí’ offers a behind the scenes perspective of one of the world’s most successful racing festivals and follows the principal characters at the 2014 Galway Races. These include John Moloney, long-time racecourse manager at Ballybrit; Dermot Weld, the 28-times leading trainer at the Galway Races; Champion flat jockey Pat Smullen; Champion amateur jockey Patrick Mullins; Galway Plate winning jockey Shane Shortall; Young apprentice jockey Kate O’Brien; Bookmaker John Mulholland; Veteran racecourse commentator, Dessie Scahill and racecourse photographer, Pat Healy. The show also examines many of the other aspects of the Galway Races including Ladies Day, the considerable benefit to the Galway economy and the Garda planning for this massive event.

Denis Kirwan, Producer, Touchline Media, said: ‘The Galway Races are the jewel in the crown of Irish racing and for many, the undoubted highlight of an Irish summer. It’s a phenomenal festival that holds a special place in the hearts of Irish racing fans and over 150,000 people descend on Ballybrit during the the week-long festival. Touchline Media’s cameras were on hand throughout to capture all the drama, the winners and losers, the hard work behind the scenes and the renowned partying.’

Luke McManus, Director, said: ‘Even people who know nothing about racing, know about the Galway Races. It’s an iconic festival that embodies so many different aspects of Irish life, from the sublime to the ridiculous. It was fascinating to see the week from behind the scenes – from the jockeys’ weigh-room to the bars of Shop Street, we even had a glimpse inside Mill Street Garda Station. It was an intense experience at times, exciting, exhausting, but always enjoyable.’

The first episode of ‘Seachtain Na Rásaí’ will air on Sunday, 30th November at 9.30pm and will be shown on the four Sundays leading up to Christmas.
