RTÉ Factual Call for Ideas
26 Nov 2014 : Seán Brosnan
RTÉ Factual is looking for ideas for one-off documentaries and short series for the autumn of 2015. They are commissioning into a number of slots from September to December for next year and RTÉ have confirmed that this is a rolling deadline.

All of the available slots are Mondays at 9:30pm on RTÉ One, so they are calling for ideas that are big enough to attract an audience at this competitive time.

According to RTÉ, they are looking for factual ideas on the following:

  • Access: Stories that have captured the nation’s imagination that would make for powerful documentaries with the right access and an intelligent, journalistic approach. Example: ‘Michaella, Peru and the Drugs Run’, the documentary looking into Michaella McCollum-Connolly, her family and the reasons she ended up in Peru, got over a 40% share when it was first broadcast
  • Timing: Stories that dominate recent public debate. Example: ‘Garth Brooks: Tomorrow Never Came’ was turned around in two weeks and given a Monday 9:30pm slot after the Garth Brooks - Croke Park controversy. On the night, it attracted over 30% of the audience. RTÉ are going to reserve a number of slots for strong reactive documentaries
  • Strong Characters: Stories that have compelling subjects and a passion at their hearts, but touch on a wider issue. Example: ‘Rough Rider’, Paul Kimmage’s programme on the drugs scandal in cycling
  • Impact: Stories that shape the agenda, rather than follow it. Example: ‘The Disappeared’, telling the story of those killed and then secretly buried by the IRA which made headlines when it was broadcast
  • Develop popular factual formats: A factual format that can make an impact with strong story, depth and insight. Must be returnable and can bring a structured narrative to bear on important human stories. RTÉ would like develop a number of proposals in this area for potential TX in 2015. Example: ‘Secret Millionaire’

Ideas should be submitted via e-commissioning. RTÉ have a maximum cost-per-hour of €120k, although they expect all ideas to be competitively priced. There is no cut-off date for applications, as there is a rolling deadline until all the slots are filled. However, they have asked for participants to get their ideas in as quickly as possible so that the project could avail of a longer production time.

Producers are asked to submit ideas into the eCommissioning system: https://e-commissioning.rte.ie under the programme category "Factual - Autumn 2015".
