Production Wraps on documentary series ‘From Tee to Green: The Story of Irish Golf’
19 Sep 2014 : Sean Brosnan
Production has completed on the free to air Setanta Ireland channel on a new series exploring the story of Irish golf – from its mythical origins to Rory McIlroy’s recent successes.

Narrated by actor Aidan Quinn, ‘From Tee to Green: The Story of Irish Golf’ employed cinematic filming techniques and never before seen archive discoveries to weave together the story of how golf reached Ireland, tracing the growth of golfing tourism and its importance to Ireland’s economy and exploring how the geography of Ireland is ideal for the sport. Featuring contributions from professional golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington, the series also asks why more Irish golfers have won major tournaments in the past 7 years than any other country outside of the United States.

The series was made by IFTA winning director Andrew Gallimore and producer Rory Dungan for Tilted Pictures Ltd and edited by John Murphy.

Regarding the archive footage, producer Rory Dungan said, ‘The incredible archive was found from a wide array of different sources. Ranging from old Super 8mm film reels kept in dusty old shoe-boxes in even dustier lofts, to pristine 16mm film reels kept in family vaults. These reels have now been gathered up and beautifully transferred to HD video and will be seen for the first time. Some sources were found through extensive word of mouth detective work, and others came from old reels of family histories. The extraordinary wealth of new footage shows golf in Ireland as it's never been seen before. Not only with the first great Irish team golf contribution, at the 1938 Walker Cup, but through newly found footage of some of Ireland's greatest golfers such as Christy O'Connor Sr, Joe Carr and Jimmy Bruen.'

The documentary was funded by the BAI Sound And Vision Scheme and Setanta Ireland.

The series is due to air on Setanta Ireland in the lead up to this years’ Ryder Cup:
  • Tuesday Sept 23rd at 9pm – Episode one
  • Wednesday Sept 24th at 9:45pm – Episode two
  • Thursday Sept 25th at 9pm – Episode three
