The Screen Awards 2014 shortlist has been announced and while Fox/Fox Searchlight lead the nominations with a combined 13 nods, and Lionsgate UK following closely with 12, Irish film productions were also acknowledged as ‘Starred Up’ and ‘Frank’ each received double nominations. ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, ‘Filth’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ are the most nominated films.

The shortlist (which can be viewed in full here) will now be debated by an independent jury of industry experts, who select the final winners. The Screen Awards are now in their fifth year and celebrate excellence in film distribution, marketing, advertising and exhibition. This year’s awards will be given out on October 23rd at The Brewery in London.

Screen International Editor Wendy Mitchell said: “We were thrilled with the calibre and diversity of entries for the Screen Awards this year. Our expert jury of industry experts now selects the winners and they will certainly have some tough decisions to make.

“From a small DIY release to the largest studio blockbusters, it’s great to see UK distributors, publicists, marketers and exhibitors doing such innovative work to connect films to audiences. We look forward to celebrating all the industry’s achievements, and especially toasting the winners, on October 23.”

The Lenny Abrahamson-directed film ‘Frank’ was shortlisted for Online Campaign of the Year and Trailer of the Year. Satrring Domhnall Gleeson and Michael Fassbender, ‘Frank’ was written by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan and is loosely based on Chris Sievey’s comic persona Frank Sidebottom. The musical comedy recently opened in the US and will have a DVD and VOD release in September (see more here).

‘Starred Up’ stars Jack O’Connell as a juvenile delinquent who is put into the same prison as his father. Shot in Belfast’s Crumlin Road Gaol, the film received funding from Northern Ireland Screen. It has been nominated for Poster Design of the Year and, like ‘Frank’, Trailer of the Year.

Also of Irish interest is that ‘Philomena’ has been nominated for PR Campaign of the Year. The film is about an Irish woman who, upon getting pregnant as a teenager, is forced to give up her son for adoption, telling the story only many years later. The movie was filmed on location in Belfast and Mayo with the cast including Irish actors Charlie Murphy, Ruth McCabe, Cathy Belton and Michelle Fairley. Irish crew members included costume designer Consolata Boyle and cinematographer Robbie Ryan.
