Avatar Post Production Expands Facilities
19 Aug 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
For any feature film, while visuals are important, an excellent soundtrack is indispensable. It can make or break a film. IFTN spoke with Avatar Audio Post Production about their expertise in the area, their recent work and technological developments they have made to improve their services in providing a distinguished and exceptional audio soundtrack.

“We’re pretty much the only audio-only facility that specialises in long-form documentary and television productions,” says Killian Fitzgerald, Managing Director and Principal Dubbing Mixer at Avatar, “A lot of audio facilities have expanded into video post production also.” Working purely on the sound means the firm’s work is focused and thorough, and Avatar works on a range of formats that include half-hour television programmes, documentaries, full-length feature documentaries, and feature films.

Avatar also offers a wealth of experience as Killian Fitzgerald has twenty five years of experience in audio post production. He worked for sixteen years in Soho, London, in major facility houses including Molinare, Space and Oasis TV.

Avatar recently supported the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival. The company gives an annual talk on audio in film - both the technical and creative side of it - to an audience of up to 100 people at the festival based in Schull. Among other festivals, Avatar also supported Comic Con in the US, for which they have mixed convention promos and promos for films being shown there. They also worked on the IFTA award ceremonies, making several of the audio and music cues, and mixing the shorts films for the ceremony as well.

Fitzgerald was also pleased to announce Avatar has expanded their facilities. “We have recently upgraded to Protools 11 HD and upgraded our monitoring to a 5.1 Klein and Hummel/Neumann system that has been installed and calibrated onsite by the manufacturer.

He continues, “we have also invested in state-of-the-art audio restoration technology, which restores damaged audio with crackles, hums, interference, etc., which has proven popular. We constantly update.” Avatar will also be expanding through working on more UK, international and co-productions in the coming year.

Work recently mixed at Avatar includes ‘Rough Rider’ directed by Adrian McCarthy and ‘Sovereign State’ directed by Sean O’Mordha, both of which recently transmitted on RTÉ; Newgrange Pictures documentary series ‘Pioneers and Aviators’; feature documentary ‘Living in a Coded Land’, directed by Pat Collins; an upcoming series on Irish mental health called ‘An Irish State of Mind’ for Blinder Films, directed by Brendan Culleton; a documentary about theatrical performance in Dublin called ‘The City of Mahogany’, which aired recently on Sky; and the ‘Hector Goes’ series. Avatar is currently working on a 2x1hr series called ‘After Braveheart’ for Tile Films, directed by Maurice Sweeney, for BBC, RTÉ and, it is hoped, American release.
