Young Irish Filmmakers get behind the camera at IADT
15 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The National Youth Film School (NYFS) takes place at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) Dun Laoghaire on July 14th – 18th 2014. The NYFS is specifically designed for young people aged 16 to 19 who are interested in pursuing a career in film-making or television. Budding filmmakers will attend a week long training and production workshop at IADT where they will get the chance to work on a professionally run crew to produce a short film. An industry premiere is planned for autumn 2014 to screen the films and showcase the young talent.

The National Youth Film School is run by Young Irish Film Makers, the national organization for youth film in Ireland. Young Irish Film Makers (YIFM) have run the national youth film school since 2002, and this year they have teamed up with IADT Dun Laoghaire and the Irish film industry to run this high talent programme for the future filmmakers of Ireland.

The programme is comprised of interactive workshops in all aspects of filmmaking - from writing to lighting, production to editing - all with professional experts in the field. The workshops will take place in the National Film School (NFS) on IADT’s campus and will also see young filmmakers shoot on location in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown area over the course of the week.

Speaking about the NYFS programme, President of the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) Dun Laoghaire, Dr Annie Doona had this to say, “Initiatives like the National Youth Film School provide young people with an opportunity to experience first-hand what a career in film involves. By providing access to industry standard equipment and resources like those available at The National Film School at IADT we are allowing young people the opportunity to be creative and pursue their interests supported by resources that prepare them for their future careers.”

Over the last 21 years Young Irish Film Makers have helped many young people to develop their skills and work towards attending film schools such as The National Film School at IADT in Dun Laoghaire.
