Final Call for 5th Underground Cinema Film Festival

‘Stalker’ won the top prize at the 2013 UCFF
The final call for the 5th Underground Cinema Film Festival has been announced. Entries must be submitted by 5pm June 30th. Applicants can download an application for UCFF 2014 from the website or can make their submission online.

This year’s festival includes a selection of some of the best new independent feature films from all over the world. There will be an international short film program and free workshops with some of the country's leading industry experts. This year’s festival also includes a Neil Jordan retrospective with Q&As with special guest Neil Jordan after the screenings, and special screenings of the work of auteur directors Kubrick, Tarantino and Cameron.

The festival hosts Dublin’s only Drive-in cinema, which will open again specially for the festival. The Drive-in cinema will also be launched across five counties (Longford, Limerick, Kildare, Cork and Dublin) from August 1st through Christmas. For Cork, the Drive-in will be specially used for Dare Media Underground Short Film Festival. The screen is three times bigger than the one opened in Dun Laoghaire back in March. The screen is attached to a portable goalpost truss which was made in China specifically for the Drive-in.

The Underground Cinema Expo, which was launched at last year’s festival with great success, will also resume. The Expo offers an exhibition of Ireland’s leading service providers to the film industry.

Screenings this year will take place in the four star Royal Marine Hotel and the Drive-in Cinema will be in the Ferry Terminal in Dun Laoghaire. The Royal Marine has screening rooms for 500, 250, 150, 100 and 80 people. The Drive-in Cinema can cater for over 120 cars.

Underground Cinema is also looking for an opening and closing film for this year’s festival. The films should stand out, they should provoke talk and debate, and push filmmaking boundaries to the limit. Past examples include Terry McMahon’s ‘Charlie Casanova’ and time travel thriller ‘Dark by Noon’.

Those interested in having their feature film be the opening/closing film at this year’s festival can email Festival Director Dave Byrne at dave@underground-cinema.com. Service providers in the film industry who would like a stand free of charge at this year’s Underground Cinema Expo can also email dave@underground-cinema.com. Places are limited so it is advised to contact Underground Cinema within the next fortnight.

Entries to the 5th Underground Cinema Film Festival may be made by downloading an application form or submitting online at www.ucff.ie
