'Breakfast Wine'
Four Irish short films have been officially selected to screen at the Palm Springs International ShortFest which takes place at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs, California, this June 17-23. ‘Breakfast Wine’, ‘The Ledge End of Phil’ ‘Ghost Train’ and ‘Volkswagon Joe’ were all selected, with the former three having received funding from the Irish Film Board. For its 20th year, ShortFest will showcase more than 320 films from more than 50 countries in its seven day program. More than 3000 festival submissions will be available in the ShortFest Market.

Ian Fitzgibbon’s ‘Breakfast Wine’ recently won both the Best Irish Short Film and Best Direction awards at the Fastnet Short Film Festival. The film follows Irish alcoholics running a country bar and stars Pat Shortt (‘Garage’), Ruth Bradley (‘Love/Hate’), Dylan Moran (‘Calvary’) and David Pearse (‘Grabbers’). The comedy was produced by Michael Garland for Grand Pictures through the IFB’s Signatures scheme and was written by Kevin Barry.

‘The Ledge End of Phil’ is an animation produced by Pearse Cullinane through Cartoon Saloon via the Frameworks scheme (co-financed by the IFB, RTÉ and the Arts Council). The short, which won Best Animation at the LA film and Script Festival, sees an accountant called Phil being forced to face a world he has been ignoring, and to take a leap of faith or else be trapped forever. It is written and directed by Paul Ó’Muiris.

The third IFB short chosen for ShortFest, ‘Ghost Train’, was directed and written by Lee Cronin. The horror follows two estranged brothers who annually take a pilgrimage to the old fairground where their friend went missing when they were young. This year, Michael will tell Peter something that will cast light on the incident and change their lives forever. ‘Ghost Train’ is an Irish-Finnish co-production produced by John Keville for Rank Outsider productions in Ireland and Ulla Simonen for MADE in Finland.

‘Volkswagen Joe’ is set in Northern Ireland in 1981, and sees a mechanic face an impossible decision in an intense political climate. Directed by Brian Deane and written by Matthew Roche, the short has won awards at the Boston Irish Film Festival and the Rome Irish Film Festival. It stars Stuart Graham (‘Hunger’) in the title role, and was produced by Kevin McCann and Anna O’Malley.

The Palm Springs International ShortFest is the only short film market in North America, thus providing filmmakers and industry guests with a place to network, attend panels, take master classes, have round-table discussions and make deals. It is also an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) qualifying festival which has gone on to secure Oscar nominations for several of the short films it has screened.
