Film Directing Course from Mark O’Connor
10 Jun 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
A new six week course designed for beginners interested in film directing is now available starting in late July. Classes will be held in The Lab on Foley Street, a dynamic hub which supports emerging art practices and focuses on fresh ways to develop engaged audiences for the visual arts. The course begins on July 26th and takes place between 3pm and 5pm for six weeks every Saturday.

The course lecturer is Mark O’Connor, the founder of production company Stalker Films and the writer-director of the critically-acclaimed and award-winning feature films ‘Between the Canals’, ‘Stalker’ and ‘King of the Travellers’. He is currently in production with actor John Connors on ‘Cardboard Gangsters’, which sees a group of youngsters attempt to gain control of the drug trade in Darndale, chasing the glorified lifestyle of money, power and sex.

The Film Directing course will cover a number of areas including crew roles, role of the director, from script to screen, basics of screenwriting, how to work with a writer, camera framing and composition, and shot descriptions, such as MS, CU, WS, etc. It will also look at coverage, crossing the line and jump cuts, camera direction and movement, how to use music effectively, storyboarding, writing short scripts, script readings and script development.

As the duties of a director are very much extensive, this course will also cover working with actors, casting, continuity, blocking, setting the tone of a film, creating a look and style, production design, props and costume, working with the editor, basics of editing, rehearsals, improvisation, and short film shoots. The course will conclude with a final screening of short films followed by an analysis.

The course costs €295. Email markoconnor123@gmail.com to book. See more information on the course’s Facebook page.
