The Victorian-era horror ‘Penny Dreadful’ has been renewed for a second season with Showtime committing to 10 more episodes, an increase on the first season’s 8-episode order.
Written and executive produced by Oscar nominee John Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator), season one of ‘Penny Dreadful’ is currently being broadcast on Tuesday nights at 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Starring Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Timothy Dalton (Licence to Kill), Eva Green (Casino Royale) and Billie Piper (Doctor Who), the show has averaged 4.8 million viewers across all Showtime platforms since its launch and ranked as the networks most-watched new show ever On Demand. The psychological thriller looks at how some of literature's most famous characters - including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light - have become embroiled in Victorian London.
With more than €30 million spent on direct investment in the Irish economy on local jobs and services, season two of the hit show is set to bring many more opportunities to the Irish industry. The Ardmore Studios filmed series is executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road), both from Neal Street Productions. ‘Penny Dreadful’ is co-produced in Ireland by Octagon Films.
Stuart Murphy, Director of Sky Entertainment channels commented: “Penny Dreadful epitomises the cinematic scale of drama we have come to expect from Sky Atlantic and we are really looking forward to continuing our partnership with David Nevins and Showtime, John Logan and Sam Mendes.”
The ten brand new episodes will start shooting on location in Dublin later this year and will arrive on Sky Atlantic in 2015.
