‘Collider’, an Irish sci-fi TV series, has been nominated for best ‘Cross-Platform Fiction’ at BANFF 2014 Rockie Awards in Canada, an internationally recognised awards programme celebrating TV content from more than 40 countries in 26 categories including drama, documentary, factual, kids and animation.
This is ‘Collider’s’ second nomination for an International TV Award after being nominated for an Emmy last month. The TV series, directed by Jason Butler (Republic of Telly, Rubberbandits), was shot in Dublin and features Iain Robertson (The Contractor, Band of Brothers) and Lucy Cudden (Pulp, Afterlife). ‘Collider’, inspired by the graphic novel of the same name, was created by writer/producer Nuno Bernardo (Sofia’s Diary, Beat Girl) and produced by Triona Campbell and John McDonnell. The series is extended by a full digital cross-platform experience that includes a series 8* 11’ webisodes, two mobile apps, a collection of six comic books and a feature film that was in Irish cinemas last January. ‘Collider’ combined traditional sci-fi themes with action packed stories with elements of drama and romance. The story focuses on a young scientist Peter who sabotages CERN laboratories’ Large Hadron Collider when his credibility is wrongfully destroyed.
Speaking about ‘Collider’s’ nomination, Campbell said; “The international market is responding well to our sci-fi series and after being sold to key territories, including Japan and Scandinavia, we are now seeing the series also being recognised at the most important events and awards ceremonies.”
The 35th annual Rockie Awards will bring together top leaders from across the evolving media landscape to the Alberta province from June 8 – 11. ‘Collider’ will go up against ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Generation War – The Motion Comic’, ‘Murdoch Mysteries: Nightmare on Queen Street’, ‘RLF – Wrong Life Can be Lived Rightly’ and ‘State of Syn’ in the Cross-Platform Fiction category. BBC’s ‘The Fall’, produced by Fable/Artists Studio, and ‘Luther’ is also nominated in the Procedural Drama category. RTE’s ‘Secrets of the Irish Landscape’, produced by Colm Crowley, is nominated in the Science and Technology category.
