US-Ireland horror ‘Cherry Tree’ to go to Cannes
MPI is bringing Irish-American horror ‘Cherry Tree’ to Cannes. David Keating directs the feature film, which sees a young girl make a deal with the leader of a witches’ coven to save her father from a seemingly terminal illness. It stars Anna Walton, Naomi Battrick and Sam Hazeldine.

MPI/Dark Sky Films recently concluded principal photography in Cork on the film, which was produced in partnership with Fantastic Films and the Irish Film Board. Dark Sky Films’ recent productions include ‘Starry Eyes’, ‘Late Phases’ and the upcoming ‘We Are Still Here’, while Dublin-based Fantastic Films produced ‘Wake Wood’, also directed by David Keating, and ‘Stitches.’ Fantastic Films also backed the award-winning films ‘Let Us Prey’ and ‘The Summit’.

‘The Canal’ is another Irish horror headed to Cannes this year.

Roberto Orci in Talks to Direct ‘Star Trek 3’
Skydance and Paramount have tapped Roberto Orci to direct the studios’ ‘Star Trek 3’. While J.J. Abrams directed the first two films of the reboot series that began in 2009, he left the franchise to direct ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ (starring Ireland’s own Domhnall Gleeson). Orci is currently writing the story for ‘Star Trek’ with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and, if a deal comes together, the screenwriter will be making his directorial debut with the movie.

Plot details remain unknown, but it is expected that leading cast members Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will return. Abrams will still produce the film, along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and David Ellison from Skydance.

While Orci is a slightly risky choice, as it is unusual for a screenwriter to debut with such a huge film, he is no stranger to blockbusters, having previously worked on the ‘Transformers’ movies, ‘Cowboys & Aliens’, and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ among other films. Orci co-wrote these films with recent ex-writing partner Alex Kutzman, and the two wrote the 2009 and 2011 ‘Star Trek’ films with Damon Lindelof.

Official Trailer for ‘Good People’
The official trailer for ‘Good People’, starring James Franco and Kate Hudson, is available to view on Youtube. The film tells the story of a married couple, tom (Franco) and Anna (Hudson), who struggle with financial straits and the risk of losing their home. However, their fate changes when their tenant dies in his basement apartment and they discover a cash-filled duffle bag before the cops, and other interested parties, find it.

‘Good People’ marks Danish director Henrik Genz’s English-language debut. The script was written by Kelly Masterson, based on the novel of the same name by Marcus Sakey. Tom Wilkinson and Omar Sy co-star as a cop and a villain, respectively. Eagle Films will release the action crime-thriller later this year.
