Jinga brings ‘The Canal’ to Cannes
13 May 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
UK genre specialist Jinga Films has added ‘The Canal’ to the slate it is taking to Cannes. Jinga, which specialises in fantasy and horror films, is also bringing Jeremy Wooding’s ‘Blood Moon’, starring George Blagden, and Alejandro Hidalgo’s ‘The House at the End of Time’, a Venezuelan horror, to the festival this month.

Ivan Kavanagh’s psychological horror had its world premiere at Tribeca. The film not only received rave reviews at the New York-based festival, but afterwards the North American rights for the feature were picked up by The Orchard under its Shock Till You Drop label.

The Irish/UK co-production follows a man who is driven insane by old newsreel footage which reveals that his home was the scene of a brutal murder. It stars Rupert Evans, IFTA nominee Antonia Campbell-Hughes (‘3096 Days’), Hannah Hoekstra and Steve Oram.

‘The Canal’ is writer/director Ivan Kavanagh’s third production with Park Films after ‘Tin Can Man’ and ‘The Fading Light’. The feature was produced by Anne Marie Naughton for Park Films with Treasure Entertainment’s Rebecca O’ Flanagan and Robert Walpole as executive producers. Irish crew members included Piers McGrail (‘Kelly + Victor’, ‘Grassland’) as cinematographer, editor Robin Hill (‘Sightseers’) and sound designer Aza Hand (‘Controra’, ‘Gold’). Egg Post Production produced picture and sound. Shot in Dublin, it received funding from the IFB and Section 481.

Jinga’s Julian Richards commented: “We are very pleased to add ‘The Canal’ to our Cannes line up. There has been a lot of buzz about this film since its screening at Tribeca and we are confident it will become one of the key genre titles of 2014.”

“I’m thrilled to have Jinga represent the film internationally. They are a perfect fit for ‘The Canal’,” said producer AnneMarie Naughton.

Distribution and sales company Wild Bunch will also be taking Irish titles to Cannes. See the IFTN article on The Irish Film Industry at Cannes 2014 for all Irish titles going to the film festival.
