Emberlight is a post-production company based on Grantham Street in Dublin 8 that specialises in high-end motion graphics for television, film, web and other digital platforms. The firm creates and delivers inventive and attractive visual solutions for corporate and commercial projects, broadcast or online. Emberlight utilises fourteen years of experience and expertise and strives to bring innovation to every project.

Director Jennifer Markham talked to IFTN about Emberlight’s goal: “Our objective was always to create motion graphics to a very high standard. We can’t in good conscience let something out the door that we are not happy with. We’re probably overly-critical of our own work. It’s a crippling affliction and it has become somewhat of a philosophy on which the company operates, but I guess all good animators need to be perfectionists.

“Every project demands an extraordinary amount of attention to detail as well as a constant level of patience needed to tweak and tinker with a motion until you are satisfied that the movement is convincing.”

Since the establishment of Emberlight in 2011, the firm has been involved in several exciting projects in both television and film. Recent projects include the re-commissioning of in-show graphics for season two of ‘The Fear’ on RTE TWO (after producing graphics for the first season), which aired last autumn.

Just before Christmas, they wrapped on a large scale graphics package for TV3’s home-produced game show ‘The Lie’. Markham says, “The scale of the project and the on-air deadline were some of the challenges faced, but we are happy with the end result and received very good feedback from everyone on the production team in TV3.” The company also produced a series of animated stings for P&G’s sponsorship of ‘Ireland AM’, again for TV3, an annual campaign Emberlight has been producing for the last three years running.

Emberlight also produced the opening titles and in-movie graphics for Des Doyle’s documentary film ‘Showrunners’, which is one of the Irish titles going to this year’s Cannes film festival (see here for more). Markham says, “The film presents an intimate discussion with some of the most talented creators of our favourite US hit TV Shows. The film takes the audience behind the scenes, into the writers’ room and on set with candid interviews with today’s top showrunners.”

For the panel, Emberlight created animation to accompany exclusive footage from the film which was followed by a Q&A session with big industry names like Greg Plageman (‘Person of Interest’, ‘Cold Case’), Terrence Winter (‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘Wolf of Wall Street’), Ronald D Moore (‘Star Trek: Next Generation’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’). Emberlight went with to NY Comic Con with the 'Showrunners' production team to shoot the panel last October.

Jennifer Markham reflects on the past year for the firm and looks at what is to come: “There is a notable pick-up in the industry now, the atmosphere has changed and things are certainly more positive and busy than they were when we first started out in the rut of the recession. I feel things have gone extraordinarily well over the past few years and we are so pleased with the opportunities that have come our way and with the calibre of the work we have been able to produce.

“I would like to predict that if things keep going the way they are, that we will continue to better ourselves in our work and in the service we provide. We have just moved into a bigger studio and we hope to expand our staff gradually. We are currently involved in some larger projects that will be completed by the end of the summer, but I can’t disclose any information about them at the moment – so watch this space I guess.”
