‘Kaleidoscope’ & ‘Homemade’ Screening at The Lir
02 May 2014 : Aisling Newton
‘Kaleidoscope’ directed by Rob Burke and ‘Homemade’ directed by Mark Sheridan will be screening at The Lir, Ireland’s National Academy of Dramatic Art at Trinity College Dublin, next Thursday May 8 at 7.30pm.

Both films were produced earlier this year and feature the graduating acting, stage management and technical theatre students from The Lir. Sheridan’s ‘Homemade’ stars Lauren Coe, Cameron Cuffe, Rhys Dunlop, Rory Corcoran, Kevin Olohan, Corrin Thomas and Sophiejo Wasson. ‘Homemade’ was also edited by Sheridan and produced by Carla Mooney and Delwyn Mooney. Cinematography was conducted by Michael Lavelle (Patrick’s Day). The idea behind the film came from inspiration with the cast. Speaking about the films collaboration, Sheridan said; “Developing a script with the cast was a really interesting experience. After participating in so many theatrical productions they all had a lot to contribute in relation to the type of story and characters they were interested in developing and playing. The further challenge of trying to fit 8 actors into a 13-min short film brought out the best in their training and forced them to use all their skills to develop and express their character in a very short period of time.”

When asked how he found working with student actors in training, Sheridan said; “The level and energy that my cast provided on each day of the rehearsal (and shoot) was exemplary and is an experience I'd hope to replicate again in the future. I feel their training showed most in how quickly we were able to get the scenes into good shape which allowed us to use the majority of the rehearsal process to finesse and refine each scene. Rebecca Kennedy (art director) did an amazing job from sample sketches to building and designing the props for the film, and despite having never worked on a film set before Nathan Gaynor took to being a 2nd AD like a duck to water.”

Burke’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ was also established from a collaborative effort between Burke and the cast members. “I found it to be a unique opportunity as a filmmaker to work with a very talented group of actors in such an organic way,” said Burke. “It was a great experience; the technical students were very resourceful and motivated. They adapted extremely well to the needs of film production as many of their skills in technical theatre transferred over.”

Both directors agreed the highlight of working on both films was the shooting process. “Seeing all the actors and technical students collaborate and bring the script to life with a real sense professionalism and dedication was great,” said Burke. Sheridan added that; “The cast’s support and dedication made shooting the film massively easier and the crew all acknowledged their delight at working with actors who not only were very friendly and generous, but also who made each take count and never gave hint or impatience when weather conditions forced delays or reshuffling of scenes.”

‘Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Homemade’ will be screened at The Lir next Thursday, May 8 at 7.30pm. For more information check out TheLir.ie.
