Underground Cinema Film Festival Open for Submissions
30 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
The 5th Underground Cinema Film Festival will take place in Dun Laoghaire from September 11 - 14, 2014.

This year’s festival will see well over 100 films being screened from all over the world and free of charge workshops from some of the country’s leading experts in film making. The festivals highlight is set to be the Underground Cinema Drive In, which was first launched back in March this year and screened numerous films such as ‘Jaws’, ‘Back to the Future’, ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘The Commitments’, ‘Alien’, ‘Despicable Me 2’ and ‘Monster’s University’. The Drive In Cinema will be located in the Stenaline ferry terminal, Dun Laoghaire, and will hold roughly 100 cars. Underground is the first film festival in Ireland to ever host a Drive In Cinema, which will screen an array of modern, independent and classic movies.

Last year the festival hosted a 20th anniversary screening of ‘The Commitments’, and this year is set to top that with another anniversary screening of Neil Jordan’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’. ‘Parked’ writer Ciara Creagh will be presenting a special workshop on directing and writing, and the stunt actor’s guild will be doing a workshop about combat in film.

Underground Cinema Film Festival Director, David Byrne, said: “I always enjoy the classic film screenings and the Q&A sessions are always great. The short film programme and the student film programme will be one of the highlights for me this year. Students from all over the country are submitting their films and it’s great to see such a high standard of work from our future filmmakers.”

Awards for the Underground Cinema Festival will be awarded as follows:

  • Best Irish Feature Film
  • Best International Feature Film
  • Best Independent Feature Film
  • Best Independent Short Film
  • Best Funded Short Film
  • Best International Short Film
  • Best Student Short Film
Submissions for the festival are being accepted from April 28 up until June 30. Submissions will be accepted either online here or alternatively you can download an application form here.

Selected film entries will be notified at the festivals launch on August 1 and the winners will be announced on the closing night of the festival in September.
