‘Last Days on Mars’ Out in Irish cinemas Today

The debut feature of Ruairi Robinson (‘Fifty Percent Grey’, ‘The Silent City’), science fiction horror-thriller ‘Last Days on Mars’, is out in cinemas nationwide today. Earning Robinson an IFTA nomination for Best Director, the film sees a number of astronauts go on a mission to Mars which goes horribly wrong. Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas, Romola Garei and Olivia Williams lead the cast.

Several Irish crew members were involved in the production. Cinematography was by Robbie Ryan, nominated for this year’s IFTAs for his work on ‘Philomena’. Steve Fanagan, Garrett Farrell and Jon Stevenson worked on sound and received an IFTA nomination for their work on the sci-fi film. The script was written by Clive Dawson and music by Max Richter.

Brendan McCarthy (‘Breakfast on Pluto’) and John McDonnell (‘Song For a Raggy Boy’) were co-producers with Fantastic Films and London-based Qwerty Films as the production companies behing ‘Last Days on Mars’. The film received backing from the Irish Film Board and from the British Film Institute.

The picture post-production for the film was completed by Screen Scene under VFX supervisors Ed Bruce and Adam McInnes. Sound post production was carried out between Screen Scene and Ardmore Sound (the VFX breakdown for the film may be viewed here).

The film premiered at Director’s Fortnight in Cannes and got US distribution via VOD and itunes. Now the film will receive its highly anticipated Irish release in cinemas today, released by Universal.
