Mary Murray for Irish Gangster Film ‘Control’
04 Apr 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Mary Murray, who has played brothel madam Janet for the last two seasons of ‘Love/Hate’, will take on the role of Emily in a new Irish gangster film called ‘Control’, which is currently in pre-production. She will star alongside Joe D’Onofrio (‘Goodfellas’), Paul Ronan (‘The Devil’s Own’), Tommy O’Neill (‘The General’), Pascal Scott (‘Grabbers’), Mark Dunne (Ado in ‘Love/Hate’), and Gerry Moore (‘Intermission’).

The film sees gang leader Ger Finnegan (O’Neill) leave the city to protect his family after his gang are murdered by crime boss Danny Quinn (D’Onofario). When his wife passes away in his absence, Ger returns to Dublin to build a new gang and have revenge on Danny and his mob.

Little Seed Films is the production company behind ‘Control’. ‘The O’Briens’ director Richard Waters is currently attached to the feature while Simon Connolly and Paul Tall-Order Ritchie will write the screenplay. Derek O’ Sullivan will produce and also star in the film. With a €1m budget, O’Sullivan has expressed determination to “break the mould and make a big film production on a small budget.”

Mary Murray now finds herself cast in another gritty drama. She stated, “From Nidge and the boys to more guns and fighting, I’ll have to watch for being type-cast. It’s more gangster madness.”

Murray is currently filming the fifth season of RTÉ drama ‘Love/Hate’, and discussed how her character, Janet, will develop more in the upcoming season: “The script is absolutely fabulous this year. You see more sides to Janet’s character, there’s a depth to her. I’m just back on set this week so it’s great catching up with everyone and hearing what they’ve all been up to.”

The Dublin actress also has tomorrow night’s IFTAs ceremony to look forward to. She and several other IFTA cast and crew members will be attending. “I can’t wait – I think it’s going to be a deadly night for us all,” she said.

Murray will be against fellow ‘Love/Hate’ actress Charlie Murphy (winner at last year’s IFTAs), Eva Birthistle of ‘Amber’ and Deirdre O’Kane of ‘Moone Boy’ for the Best Actress in a Lead Role in Television award. ‘Love/Hate’ also received nominations in six other categories.

‘Control’ will go into production this summer with a 2015 release date.
