DkIT & RTÉ to Host CIRCOM Workshop
28 Mar 2014 : Aisling Newton
In preparation for the joint-hosting of the 2015 Annual Conference of CIRCOM (the European Association of Regional Television), the Section of Creative Media in Dundalk Institute of Technology and RTÉ will host a one-day CIRCOM workshop on Thursday April 3 in the purpose-built media facilities of the Carroll’s building on the DkIT campus.

Broadcasters from eleven countries representing thirteen TV stations across Europe, including; the BBC, ROOS Netherlands, STV Slovenia, MTVA Hungary, RAI Italy, GTV Spain and France Télévisions, will all attend the one-day workshop - the purpose of which is for European broadcasters to share their experiences using new live broadcasting technologies.

Some of the areas for discussion will include:

  • Network reliability
  • Strengths and weaknesses of the different networks: 3G/4G/WiFi/KA Band etc.
  • Hardware supplied by small bespoke companies as well as the major players in the broadcast sector
  • Cost advantages
  • Opportunities for regional broadcasters and regional programming
  • New skills required of operators and journalists

While the Annual CIRCOM conference will be held in May 2014 in Cavtat, Croatia, this workshop will allow DkIT and RTÉ to build upon their current working relationship, which has already seen the Dundalk RTÉ Regional Studio moving onto the campus. The CIRCOM annual conference in May 2015 will be the first time ever that this annual conference has been held in Ireland.

Speaking this week the Head of Section of Creative Media, Sarah McCann said: “The excellent technical media facilities and talented staff we have here in the Section of Creative Media have enabled us to collaborate with RTÉ so that we can hold the conference in Ireland for the very first time, along with hosting this current workshop. The workshop and the conference represent excellent opportunities to develop our networks and knowledge of constantly evolving broadcasting technologies and techniques.”

RTÉ’s Michael Lally said: “This is a significant milestone ahead of next year’s full CIRCOM conference which we hope will showcase the area as well as bring an economic boost to the region.”
