Limerick Film Festival Schedule Revealed
25 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
The 5th Annual Limerick Film Festival will take place over three days this April. The programme for the 2014 festival was launched at the George Boutique Hotel today. The annual event is dedicated to celebrating the medium of film, drawing in the community and inspiring professionals and new talent in the art of filmmaking.

The Limerick Film Festival hosts a short film competition that has grown in its international status with entries from more countries each year the competition has taken place. The festival also hosts a number of guest talks, demonstrations and workshops every year, for example for all three days of the festival this year, there will be ongoing professional camera workshops and demonstrations at Whelans Cameras on O’ Connell Street, Limerick. Additionally, on Friday 11 April, there will be a public display of interactive audio/video installations by 4th year LIT students in both Music Production and Audio & Video Production programmes from noon until 5pm in the Daghda Space, St. John’s Church.

On the first day of the event, Thursday 10 April, two features will be screened and a session of short films in competition will be screened. Documentary ‘When There’s a Well’ will be shown at noon. It follows the journey of a water pump from a factory to a Malawian village, exploring how the clean water improves the community’s lives.

The second feature to screen that day is ‘The Enigma of Frank Ryan’, based on the true story of a Limerick man who was an IRA volunteer as a teenager, became a leftist activist and leader of the Republican Irish Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, and was involved with the Nazis later on in life.

From 11am to 1pm of Day Two, producer-director Pat Comer, who hails from Salthill, Galway, will be a special guest speaker in a talk held at O’ Connell Street. Comer has worked on sporting-themed documentaries as well as comedic documentaries such as ‘In the Name of the Fada’ and ‘D’Unbelievables’. Nathan Nugent will be the second guest speaker, from 4-6pm. Nugent won an IFTA last year for ‘What Richard Did’ and recent completed work on Lenny Abrahamson’s latest feature, ‘Frank’. He has been nominated again for this year’s Editing IFTA for ‘Run & Jump’.

The evening of Day Two will see a special screening of the Oscar Long Listed Short ‘The Missing Scarf’ at 8pm, followed by a Q&A session. ‘The Missing Scarf’ has screened at several national and international festivals, and has won awards in Galway, Cork, LA and Memphis.

Day Three will see writer Rob Crawley hold a Q&A session on the development, production and broadcast of his screenplay for RTÉ series ‘Amber’, as well as holding a talk on screenwriting in general. Later on in the day, feature film ‘Peripheral Vision’, which charts the realities and frustrations of some small groups who tried to mobilise the public against the bank bailouts and austerity from 2011-2012, will be screened.

The Awards show on Saturday 12 evening is the highlight on the schedule, where both professional and student filmmakers are honoured for their creative talents across the different disciplines of film. The Awards show will take place at 8pm at the Milennium Theatre, with the After Party at the George Boutique Hotel from 10pm.
