Irish Actor Aidan Turner Cast in ‘Poldark’
28 Feb 2014 : Aisling Newton
Dublin native Aidan Turner has landed a role in the remake of the classic TV series ‘Poldark’.

Turner takes on the lead role of Ross Poldark, 40 years after Robin Ellis starred in the BBC original. The stories are adapted from Winston Graham’s novels set in late 18th century Cornwall. The six-part series sees Poldark return to his estate from the American Revolutionary war to find Britain in the grip of a chilling recession – with his father dead, his home in ruins and the love of his life, Elizabeth, engaged to his cousin.

The 30-year-old actor got his start in a number of theatre productions following his graduation from the Gaiety School of Acting in 2004. He quickly made the transition from stage to screen, landing roles in Irish-shot period drama ‘The Tudors’, BBC series ‘Desperate Romantics’ and RTÉ series ‘The Clinic’. Turner is best known for playing the role of Kili in the first two ‘Hobbit’ movies of the trilogy and also spent four years as 117-year-old vampire John Mitchell in BBC3’s ‘Being Human’.

The remake will remain true to the original, focusing on Ross Poldark’s return to a much-changed Cornwall home life.

‘Poldark’ is adapted by writer Debbie Horsfield (Cutting It), directed by Ed Bazalgette (The Guilty, Endeavour) and executive produced by Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen. Turner will star alongside ‘Eastenders’ actress Lacey Turner in the new version.

In the 1970s the BBC had much success with the series, selling the rights to ‘Poldark’ in more than 40 countries. The BBC re-make of ‘Poldark’ will go up against ITV1’s ‘Downton Abbey’ when it returns later this year.

Filming begins in Cornwall and Bristol in April 2014 and the series will transmit in 2015 on BBC One.
