Still Films at Rencontres Internationales Paris
24 Feb 2014 : Aisling Newton
Still Films will be showing two new works at the Rencontres Internationales festival this week, which takes place at the Palais de Tokyo and Gaîté Lyrique, Paris.

The festival offers an international programme of activities in cinema, video and multimedia fields, which generate meeting and exchanges between audience, artists and professionals.

‘Missing Green’ by Anne Maree Barry and ‘DMC-13’ by Paul Rowley will feature on Friday February 28th at 4pm in the post-industriel section of the festival. Both films have been produced with support from the Irish Arts Council.

‘Missing Green’ is a poetic journey through Cork Street, Dublin, where two parallel stories inter mesh to create one underlying narrative. Combining documentary research with documentary drama – a series of interviews make up the film’s narration whilst the camera captures a girl’s journey through the urban landscape of which they speak. Anne Maree Barry is a film artist based in Dublin. The director and editor’s experimental short films have screened internationally and her work has also been installed in a gallery context at The LAB, Dublin and the Tampere Art Museum, Finland.

Glen Collins is the producer for ‘Missing Green’ and Nicky Gogan is the executive producer. Voices that feature on the short film include Gerry Cahill, Aileen O’Gorman, Frank McDonald, Cllr John Gallagher. The music/soundscape is composed by Irish producer Eoin Bradshaw. Other key crew members include Piers McGrail (Dir. Photography), Steve Battle (DIT) and Steve Fanagan (Sound Mix, Ardmore Sound).

‘DMC-13’ is a short video produced on analog video synthesisers at the Experimental Television Center in New York. The film uses images from a documentary on John DeLorean - the ill-fated automobile manufacturer - who opened his luxury sports car factory in Belfast at the height of the troubles in the north of Ireland. Music for ‘DMC-13’ is by Till By Turning. Paul Rowley is a visual artist and filmmaker who began making films in 1995.

Speaking about the festival Rowley said: "We're delighted to be taking part in Rencontres Internationales again this year. The festival is one of our long time favourites and has supported our work for many years. The programmers bring together a widely diverse programme of contemporary moving image work. Discussions around the films is always an exciting part of the festival too, so we're looking forward to seeing lots of new and innovative work this week."

Still Films director/producer and Darklight Festival director Nicky Gogan will also participate in a panel discussion on Sunday March 2nd, at 6pm, at the Plateau Média of the Gaîté Lyrique. The panel will look at constantly evolving contemporary moving image practices in the fields of cinema and contemporary art, and their impact and consequences on collective experience.

The Irish artists screening Rencontres this week are supported by Culture Ireland and the Centre Culturel Irlandais.
