Teach Solais – Providing a Beacon of Light in the Irish TV & Film Industry
07 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Based in Ardmore Studios, Bray, Co. Wicklow, Teach Solais (or Lighthouse) is a significant film/TV lighting and generator hiring company in Ireland’s TV and film industry.

Teach Solais is now managed by Jason Foran, who was formally of Cine Electric and has worked in the film lighting industry for over fifteen years. Assistant Manager Barry O’ Connor also formerly worked in Cine Electric. The pair has worked together for the past twelve years and both joined Teach Solais in February 2013.

Teach Solais is owned by Director of Photography Cian de Buitléar, who has worked on a variety of feature films, commercials and documentaries. De Buitléar had a busy 2013 as he shot ‘An Bronntonas’ (a TV thriller about a lifeguard crew off the Connemara coast), ‘The Centre’ and a number of commercials. He recently wrapped up shooting in Kiev.

In the last year alone, the lighting and generator company supplied equipment for commercials for dozens of national and international brands including Google, Aldi, Lidl, Lyon’s Tea, 3 Mobile, AIB, Kerry Gold, ISPCA, Trócaire, Oxfam, Buchannan’s, Tesco, McDonald’s, Newbridge Silverware, TG4, TV3, Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis, Nationwide, HSE, Kildare Outlet Village, Paddy Power, Barry’s Tea, Low Low, Jameson, Calor Gas, Kenco, Powerscourt Hotel, Barretstown, Meteor, Spar, Supervalu, Carzone, Sky Sports, Irish Rail, Carroll’s Ham, Guinness, IDA, Bord Na Móna, ISPCC, Clarion Hotels, RTÉ Comedy Awards, National Lottery, Littlewoods, Cuisine De France, Irish Ferries and many more.

Since February 2013, films, TV dramas and documentary projects that Teach Solais have been involved with include ‘Mrs Brown’s Boys D’ Movie’, ‘Undeniable’, ‘The Stag’, ‘The Nymph’, ‘Game Of Thrones’ (Season 4, second unit), ‘Love/Hate’ Season 4, ‘An Bronntonas’, ‘Reign’ (based on Mary Queen Of Scots), ‘Brand New-U’, ‘The Centre’, ‘The Savage Eye’, ‘Corp & Anam’, ‘Jack Taylor’, ‘Damo and Ivor’, ‘Jimmy’s Hall’, 'Vikings', (which is currently showing on RTÉ2) and the promos for productions like ‘Penny Dreadful’, which wrapped its shoot in Ardmore Studios this week.

“The key to Teach Solais`s success is our experience and professional approach to all projects and how we conduct our business,” said manager Jason Foran, “with Cian being a director of photography, his vast knowledge stands alone, and Barry and I have twenty eight combined years’ experience in lighting, which speaks for itself . We also keep up to date with equipment as it changes in lighting and camera and plan to add to our current stock this year.”

Teach Solais also covered several noteworthy events in the past year, including St. Patrick’s Day, sporting events including the Heineken Cup and RaboDirect PRO12 in The Aviva Stadium, as well as high profile government projects such as the G8 Summit in Northern Ireland.

Additionally, Teach Solais contributed to several music videos in the last year by artists such as Kodaline, The Original Rude Boys, Sharon & The Shortcuts, The Strypes, Childline, Vann Music, Roísín O, The Hot Sprockets, Little Green Cars, Matrix & Futurebound, One Direction, and The Panoramics among many others. A promotional shoot for the band U2 was another significant project.

In 2013, Teach Solais became the sole lighting rental partner with Arri Lighting Rental London. Jason explains that the partnership “enables us to pursue the larger dramas and feature films that shoot in Ireland, without affecting our day to day running of our warehouse in Ardmore studios and allowing us to facilitate commercials, music videos, documentaries, dramas etc.”

As for what the providers have next on their agenda, Jason commented “At the moment we are busy with commercials , music videos and short films which is good as the start of the year is normally slow to get going.

”Over the past six weeks, we have been doing a major revamp on our equipment to be ready for a busy 2014 and look forward to the challenges ahead. We also have two generators being built to meet demand, including a 4x4 all-terrain land rover generator – this will be our second land rover and we are the only lighting company in Ireland to own such generators – which allows productions to gain access to off road areas that a truck or trailer generator couldn’t do.”
