Appointment of RTÉ Director General for a further four years
05 Feb 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Noel Curran has been reappointed as Director General of RTÉ for four more years.
The Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte TD, has confirmed that the re-appointment of Noel Curran as Director General of RTÉ has been approved by the Government. Noel Curran will resume his position for a further four years.

Minister Rabbitte expressed enthusiasm for the reappointment and noted that Curran has demonstrated great leadership thus far, whereby RTÉ has been operating in a constrained economy, facing increasing competition and commercial challenges.

The Minister stated: “Noel Curran’s performance has been of the highest standard. His reappointment and the continuity within the organisation that this provides will be of great benefit to both the organisation and its staff.”

Under Section 89 of the Broadcasting Act, the consent of Government is necessary for RTÉ to appoint a Director General. The Director-General is appointed by the Board of RTÉ following a public competition.

Tom Savage, Chairman of the RTÉ Board, said: “I would like to say how pleased I am personally that Noel Curran has agreed to continue for a further period of four years. The Board and I look forward to continuing to work with him. The organisation as a whole will benefit from a steady hand in these difficult economic times and the changes in this industry that lie ahead.”

As the Director General, Noel Curran will continue to be the most senior executive position in the RTÉ organisational structure. As well as being the organisation's Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief, the Director General represents RTÉ both nationally and internationally.

Noel Curran was appointed Director General of RTÉ in November 2010 with effect from February 2011. He is a native of Co. Monaghan and attended Dublin City University at which he studied Communications. Noel's experience in Irish media runs from the print industry to senior management level in broadcasting.

He was Deputy Editor with Business and Finance before joining RTÉ in 1992. There, Noel worked as a reporter, producer and editor in RTÉ Television. He was executive producer of the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1997 and served two terms as Editor of Current Affairs in the News Division, where he established the Prime Time Investigates programme strand. Noel Curran joined RTÉ's Executive as Managing Director of Television in 2003.
