One of Ireland’s leading filmmakers Thaddeus O’Sullivan is set to direct an adaption of the award-winning novel ‘The Secret Scripture’.

O’Sullivan, who recently directed the hit TV series ‘Amber’, was IFTA nominated for his last feature film ‘Stella Days’ in 2012. He previously won an IFTA for his Churchill drama ‘Into the Storm’ in 2010, which was also Emmy nominated.

The Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave led movie is currently in pre-production and is expected to start shooting in June. Filming will take place over eight weeks on location in Wicklow and Sligo.

Voltage Pictures, which financed and sold the Oscar-nominated ‘Dallas Buyers Club’, is in final negotiations to come aboard as the sales agent for the project, which will be selling in Berlin.

Hollywood actress Chastain will take the lead role as Roseanne McNulty, a 100-year-old woman residing at Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital since World War Two. Chastain will play the young version of Roseanne, with Redgrave portraying her later in life.

The film has had a leading lady for some time but has only recently appointed O’Sullivan, who has consistently delivered epic visual and intricate storytelling on screen.

‘The Secret Scripture’ is a 2008 novel written by Irish writer Sebastian Barry. It won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2008 and was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

Ferndale Films Noel Pearson, who was nominated for an Oscar for ‘My Left Foot’ in 1990, is set to produce the late Johnny Ferguson’s adaptation of Sebastian Barry's novel. Irish screenwriter Ferguson died in 2013 after a short illness. He is best known for his work on ‘Gangster no 1’, ‘The Magnificat’ and received and IFTA nomination for the 2007 mini-series ‘Fallout’.

This is the second project located in Ireland for Chastain who filmed ‘Miss Julie’ on location in Co. Fermanagh in 2013, an Irish/Norwegian/English co-production, produced by Dublin-based Subotica.

Thaddeus O’Sullivan previously spoke to IFTN about his highly popular TV drama series ‘Amber’, which aired on RTÉ. The interview can be viewed here
