U2’s song for ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’, entitled ‘Ordinary Love’, has been nominated in the music category for Best Original Song. The song’s music was written by Paul Hewson, Dave Evans, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, with lyrics by Paul Hewson. It has already won for Best Original Song at the recent Golden Globe ceremony.
Michael Fassbender is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a torturous slave owner in ’12 Years a Slave’. His greatest competition will be Jared Leto, who won this year’s Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’.
On hearing of his nomination, Fassbender stated, "I'm really chuffed with the Oscar nomination especially being recognised alongside such great actors. It's a real honour."
In another competitive category, Best Picture, ‘Philomena’ starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan is one of the nine nominees. Shot in Belfast and Mayo, the film includes Irish actors Charlie Murphy, Ruth McCabe, Cathy Belton and Michelle Fairley in its cast. Irish crew members include costume designer Consolata Boyle and cinematographer Robbie Ryan.
