'Philomena', Starring Judi Dench & Steve Coogan, Now in Irish Cinemas
01 Nov 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Judi Dench and Steve Coogan in 'Philomena'.
‘Philomena’ - the heartbreaking true story of Irish woman Philomena Lee, who was forced by nuns to give up her son for adoption, prompting a search for him 50 years later – is now released in Irish cinemas, distributed by Eclipse Pictures.

Partly filmed in Belfast, the film is directed by Stephen Frears (‘The Queen’) and stars Judi Dench in the titular role, with Steve Coogan playing former BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith who aids her in her investigation.

Hailed as a serious Oscar contender following glowing reviews at the Venice Film Festival, ‘Philomena’ stars Irish actresses Charlie Murphy (Siobhán in ‘Love/Hate’), Ruth McCabe (‘Run & Jump’), Cathy Belton (IFTA-nominated for 'Roy') and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark in ‘Game of Thrones’) in supporting roles.

Other Irish crew members include costume designer Consolata Boyle ('The Queen', 'Byzantium') and cinematographer Robbie Ryan (‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘The Last Days on Mars’), who is now shooting ‘Slow West’ with Michael Fassbender in New Zealand.

The screenplay was co-written by Steve Coogan (who also produced) and Jeff Pope, adapted from Sixsmith’s book ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, first published in 2011.

’Philomena’ was made by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions – who are also responsible for ‘Moone Boy’, which featured Coogan with a convincing Mayo accent as the hilarious Francie 'Touchy' Feeley in season one.

The film is a co-production between BBC Films, Baby Cow Productions, BFI, Magnolia Mae Films and Pathé, and the trailer can be seen below:
