A documentary focusing on one of Ireland's most famous sporting grounds will air on TG4 this weekend, Sunday the 3rd of November.
'Thomond' will take the audience through the long history of Limerick's most cherished stadium, which began as a muddy field used to graze cattle in the off-season and has arguably become the seat and spiritual home of rugby in Ireland.
Spanning half a century, the documentary will look not only at the physical transformation undergone by the sporting ground over the years, but on the loyal following that has grown up around the provincial Munster team, oft-cited as one of the most passionate in the world.
Using never-before-seen archival material, 'Thomond' will shed light on the fierce rivalries played out between local teams as well as the enthralling highs the ground has seen, such as Munster's famous 12-0 victory of New Zealand's All Black's in 1978.
Historians will weigh in alongside players past and present, with familiar faces such as Paul O' Connell, Donnacha Ryan and Donncha O' Callaghan detailing how experiences at the historic site have moulded their careers.
"There is no sports ground like it in Ireland," says director Shane Tobin. "There is a synergy between the people, fans and the players and this documentary wishes to showcase that bond, and the magic that has happened at Thomond so often in recent times."
A Square One Production, 'Thomond' was edited by Áine Furlong and filmed by IFTA winner Michael O' Donovan and Cathal O' Hullachain on the RED camera. The sound was mixed by Barry Reid of Gorilla Post-Production, and grading was carried out by Rory Gavin of Reelgood Studios.
'Thomond' will air at 9.30pm on TG4 on Sunday November 3rd, repeating at 7.30 p.m. on Monday the 4th. A trailer can be viewed below.
