‘The Last Days on Mars’ – directed by Ruairi Robinson and produced by Dublin’s Fantastic Films – will be released by Magnet in the US this 31st October on Premium VOD and iTunes, before a wider US cinema release on 6th December.
The sci-fi horror film has already enjoyed considerable success in being selected for the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival this year, prompting its acquisition by Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures.
Producer John McDonnell told IFTN: ‘I suppose from our point of view I always had huge faith in Ruairí Robinson. He’s an amazing director and a really interesting talent. So I think his first feature film has been hugely anticipated. I think he’s done a terrific job on it and we’re very proud of him.’
The film stars Liev Schreiber (‘Scream’); Elias Koteas (‘Shutter Island’); Romola Garai (‘Atonement’); Olivia Williams (‘The Sixth Sense’); and Tom Cullen (‘Downtown Abbey’) in the story of an astronaut crew on a Mars base who discover evidence of bacterial life - with deadly consequences.
A Fantastic Films and Qwerty Films co-production, the film received Irish Film Board funding, and was produced by Fantastic Films' John McDonnell and Brendan McCarthy, along with Michael Kuhn and Andrea Cornwell.
Other key crew included Director of photography Robbie Ryan and screenwriter Clive Dawson, with post-production handled by Irish VFX house Screen Scene.
