A multimedia documentary following the events of the 1913 strike and lockout in Dublin city will air on TG4 tonight, October 30th.
Celebrating the centenary year of one of the most defining events in Irish history, Esras Films have produced a documentary touting a unique blend of archived newsreels, dramatic reconstruction, 3D animation and graphic-novel style artwork to tell the story of James 'Big Jim' Larkin and the Irish Transport and General Workers Union.
The documentary was directed by Brian Gray for Esras Films, and all featured photo manipulation and 3D animation is the work of Dublin-based Design for Life, who also produced the opening title sequence.
Presented by former Irish politician, SIPTU-leader and lifelong trade unionist Des Geraghty, the Irish-language production casts an eye on the tense months leading up to the prolonged class struggle that would see 20, 000 workers locked out of prominent Dublin businesses, as a mercantile class eager for the promised implementation of Home Rule ruthlessly quashed any disruptive attempts to unionize.
The dramatic reconstruction strand of the documentary will see Stephen Murray take on the distinctively impassioned oration style of Jim Larkin, while Irish screen veteran Bosco Hogan will play prominent Dublin businessman and strike-breaker William Martin Murphy.
'Stailc 1913' will air on TG4 at 9.30 p.m. on October 30th.
