U2 have written a new song, ‘Ordinary Love’, their first since ‘No Line on Horizon’ in 2009, for the upcoming biopic 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom'.
The song is set to feature on the soundtrack for the film.
Weinstein Company co-founder Harvey Weinstein asked the band to write the song for the film.
Weinstein has been reported as saying, ‘It was the fastest 'yes' I have ever received. The band saw various cuts of the film over the summer and worked diligently to write a song that truly reflects Nelson Mandela.’
’I think they did a brilliant job honouring the man and the leader they have known for over 20 years.’
‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ is based on the 1994 autobiography by Nelson Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician.
Idris Elba (‘Prometheus’, ‘Luther’) stars as Nelson Mandela with Naomie Harris (‘Skyfall’) starring as his wife Winnie Mandela.
Directed by Justin Chadwick, who is directing the TV movie ‘Money’ starring Brendan Gleeson, the film is based on an adapted screenplay by William Nicholson (‘Gladiator’, ‘Les Miserables’).
It was produced by François Ivernel (‘Philomena’, ‘The Queen’) and Cameron McCracken (‘Breakfast on Pluto’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’). Editing was by Rick Russell.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September, is set to be released in Irish cinemas on the 3rd January 2014.
