Michael Fassbender Begins Filming ‘Slow West’ in New Zealand
21 Oct 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Michael Fassbender and Irish DoP Robbie Ryan have begun filming 'Slow West' in New Zealand.
Michael Fassbender has today begun principal photography in New Zealand on ‘Slow West’ - a 19th century Western set in the American Frontier - with the Irish actor also producing for the first time.

Irish cinematographer and IADT graduate Robbie Ryan is also shooting the film, whose recent credits include Steph Frears’ 'Philomena' and 'The Last Days on Mars' - Irish director Ruairí Robinson’s sci-fi horror which featured in the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

According to Screen Daily who broke the story, ‘Slow West’ follows a 17-year-old -boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on a journey across America in search of the woman he loves, while accompanied by Fassbender’s character Silas, a mysterious traveller.

‘Slow West’ is helmed by British director John Maclean (‘High Fidelity’) with other producers including Iain Canning and Emile Sherman ('The King’s Speech') of See-Saw Films; Conor McCaughan of DMC Film; and Rachel Gardner.

Fassbender previously collaborated with Maclean on his 2012 Bafta-winning short ‘Pitch Black Heist’, in which he played a professional safe cracker alongside fellow Irish actor Liam Cunningham.

Among the many awards won by Robbie Ryan are the Golden Osella award at the Venice Film Festival; Best director of photography at the Valladolid International Film Festival; and Best Technical Achievement at the Evening Standard British Film Award for ‘Wuthering Heights’.

Young actor Kodi Smit-McPhee’s other notable roles include John Hillcoat’s ‘The Road’, ‘Let Me In’ and the forthcoming ‘Dawn of The Planet of the Apes’.

Other cast & crew members on ‘Slow West’ include Ben Mendelsohn, star of Belfast-shot film ‘Starred Up’; production designer Kim Sinclair (‘Avatar’, ‘Man of Steel’); costume designer Kirsty Cameron (‘Whale Rider’) and make-up designer Dannelle Satherley (‘The Hobbit’).

The film will also partly shoot on location in the Scottish highlands, and is financed by Film4, the BFI, the New Zealand Film Commission and Fulcrum Media Finance.

The film continues Michael Fassbender’s domination of Hollywood as one of its most in-demand actors, with significant Oscar buzz surrounding his role in ‘12 Years a Slave’ – Fassbender’s third film with director Steve McQueen, following ‘Hunger’ and ‘Shame’.

He will also appear in Ridley Scott’s ‘The Counselor’, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel about a lawyer who becomes involved in drug trafficking.
