Steve Carson - RTÉ Chief Editorial Advisor & Director of Factual Group - is set to take up the role of Head of BBC Northern Ireland Productions before the end of the year.
Appointed RTÉ Director of Programmes in 2009, Mr Carson was responsible for home-produced programming, both in-house and commissioned, across RTÉ One and RTÉ Two.
In 2011, he took on the additional temporary role of Acting Editor of Current Affairs before being appointed RTÉ Chief Editorial Advisor and Director of Factual Group in May 2013.
Mr Carson said of the announcement: ‘I am really going to miss working alongside the dedicated production and commissioning teams in RTÉ. I feel lucky to have had a chance to play a part in bringing to air some really good programmes over the past four years, across all the genres.
‘It’s been a privilege to work with you all in a vital public service that touches the lives of everyone in the country’.
Mr Carson previously worked with the BBC as a producer/director on programmes including ‘Newsnight’, ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Panorama’, having begun his career in BBC Manchester in 1990.
RTÉ managing Director Glen Killane said: ‘Steve has made a huge and valued contribution to RTÉ Television over-seeing home-produced programming across RTÉ One and RTÉ Two over the last four years, and before that as an independent producer with Mint Productions, producing critically acclaimed and award-winning programmes for RTÉ Television. I wish Steve all the best in his new role and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role in BBC NI on a number of co-productions’.
RTÉ Director General Noel Curran added: ‘Despite the difficult commercial and media environments of recent years, Steve Carson led a programming team that delivered consistently high-quality and award-winning programmes. He also took on the role of Acting Editor of Current Affairs at a sensitive and critical time for RTÉ, and led that team with distinction. I would like to acknowledge the contribution Steve Carson has made to RTÉ, and I wish him well in his new role.’
