IFTN takes a look at three different stories in our weekly round-up, ranging from Cathy Brady’s European Film nomination to the Blackrock animation festival and an Irish screenwriter's short now in post-production.

‘Morning’ Nominated for European Film award

Irish director Cathy Brady has received a European Film Nomination for her IFTA-winning short film, 'Morning' (2012).

The short, which garnered the director her second IFTA following the success of 'Small Change' (2010), concerns a mother grieving for her murdered daughter and her confrontation with a news reporter who visits her home one morning. Brady co-wrote the script alongside screenwriter Sarah Woolner.

The European Film Academy consists of over 2,900 members encompassing directors, actors and filmmakers of all varieties. All nominees must come recommended from member festivals, and 'Morning' was shortlisted and nominated following its screening at the Cork Short Film Festival.

Previous Irish entries include 'Shame' starring Michael Fassbender and 'What Richard Did', which has been shortlisted in this year's feature category.

Blackrock Animation Festival this 11- 12th Oct

The Blackrock Animated Film Festival, 11th and 12th October, will this weekend see IADT host Vivien Halas - daughter of renowned British animation team Halas and Batchelor, and curator of the Halas and Batchelor archive.

The archive preserves the memory of what was the largest and most influential animation studio in Western Europe, producing over 2,000 films and earned an international reputation for quality animation capable of explaining complex ideas with clarity and humour.

Ms. Halas is a decorated graphic designer in her own right, having worked with a number of top agencies in London and founded two companies of her own. Her presentation will be followed by a screening of 'An Animated Utopia', a centenary documentary honouring the work of her parents.

The full line-up of shorts and animated films being screened can be found here.

Irish Screenwriter’s Short Now in Post-Production

‘Follies of Youth’, a short written by Irish screenwriter Aisling Corristine (The Road Less Travelled) and Alex Whitmer (Bitter Shoes, The Poacher), is now in post-production following an August shoot.

Irish cinematographer Cainneach Mac Eoin (The Brotherhood, Anna) shot the short, which was directed by Melina Curi and produced by Kevin Fisher for Dynamic Entertainment.

Cast members include Mark Schrier, Dorothy Cotter, Melina Curi and Kamil Krawczak.
