'Penny Dreadful', Showtime Horror Series, Now Filming in Dublin

Josh Harnett and Helen McCrory star in 'Penny Dreadul', now filming in Dublin.
‘Penny Dreadful’ – ‘Skyfall’ producers John Logan & Sam Mendes’ new Victorian horror series for Showtime in the US – has begun principal photography in Cabinteely Park in Dublin, before production moves to Ardmore Studios in Bray.

Josh Hartnett (‘Sin City’, ‘Pearl Harbour’) and Irish actor Owen Roe (‘Titanic: Blood and Steel’, ‘Intermission’) were both spotted shooting scenes on the set of a Wild West themed travelling carnival on Friday- with filming to recommence today.

‘Penny Dreadful’, which reimagines the origin tales of some of horror literature’s best known characters, is availing of Ireland’s section 481 tax incentives to raise €33m of its production budget.

The first two episodes of the eight-part series are being directed by Spanish film director Juan Antonio Bayona (‘The Orphanage’, ‘The Impossible’), with an impressive cast including Timothy Dalton, Eva Green and Billie Piper.

Another recent high-profile addition to the cast is Bafta-winning actress Helen McCrory (‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’) who plays a character called Madame Kali.

Irish crew members include Limerick conceptual artist Norman Walshe and Art Director Conor Dennison.

The series is produced by Logan and Mendes along with Pippa Harris ('Revolutionary Road') of Neal Street Productions and Chris W. King ('Foo Fighters: Back and Forth').

‘Penny Dreadful’ creator/writer John Logan was previously nominated for three Oscars for his screenplays for ‘Gladiator’, ‘Hugo’ and ‘The Aviator’, and will reunite with Mendes for the 24th Bond, their follow-up to ‘Skyfall’.
