Irish series ‘Beat Girl’, produced by beActive and shot on location in Dublin last year, has received an Emmy nomination in the Best Series category.

The series is nominated for the for the prestigious awards, which will take place in New York on February 2014, as announced by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at their press conference yesterday.

Beat Girl’, was originally made as a low budget feature film in 2012, directed by Mairtín de Barra with Triona Campbell and Nuno Bernardo producing, based on a script written by Bernardo, Susana Tavares and Melanie Martinez.

IFTN spoke to producer Triona Campbell this week and she described her delight at the Emmy nomination.

‘It feels really great, it’s for the series so it is for everyone who worked on the show so it is everyone who contributed. It was a team effort the whole way through,’ she said.

The ‘Beat Girl’ story was developed into a multiplatform project by Irish-Portuguese production company beActive.

‘Beat Girl’ was developed into a feature film, a TV series, online webisodes called ‘The Beat Girl Diaries’, and a Pinterest project, all adapted from Irish writer Jasmina Kallay’s novel of the same name.

The film and series stars Louise Dylan as Heather, a classical pianist whose music brings her on a life journey, as she finds herself torn between following her late mother’s footsteps as a world class pianist and the enticing underground world of electronic music.

‘It was always a story with a lot of heart and it is a story that resonates with a lot of people. Our main character is at a crossroads in her life,’ Ms Campbell told IFTN. ‘And I think everybody has that moment in their lives where they think am I doing the right thing or should I be doing something else and that’s why that story resonates with so many people.’

The series was produced using Section 481 tax incentives and Portuguese fund FICA.

Beat Girl already made an impact on the big screen in Ireland, UK and Portugal as well as a successful spin-off book, mobile game and Soundtrack CD.

The series is currently available on iTunes in Europe and in the US on Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription service, making it eligible for the Emmy nomination.

It has also been broadcasted on TV in Israel and soon will be seen on Scandinavian screens.

This is Dublin-based beActive’s second Emmy nomination following their nomination in 2010 with the thriller ‘Final Punishment‘, co-produced with Brazil.

beActive have just finished their first sci-fi film ‘Collider’ with Irish director Jason Butler.
