Shorts Round-Up: 'Covet', 'The Red Bear' and 'Uisce Beatha'
04 Oct 2013 : By Kevin Cronin
Marion O’Dwyer in 'Covet', by filmmaker Liam O Mochain.
In this week’s Shorts Round-up, IFTN takes a look at three Irish-produced short films headed to film festivals at home and abroad - stories of unrequited love, a Bosnian war photographer and a Cork man bound for the Titanic.

‘Covet’ to Premiere at Dublin International Short Film Festival

Irish writer/director Liam O Mochain’s Covet - a quirky short about a woman’s story of unrequited love - will premiere at the Dublin International Short Film & Music Festival this Saturday 5th October at 2:45pm at 4 Dame Lane.

Inspired by ‘one of the Ten Commandments’, the film stars Marion O’Dwyer (‘Ondine’, ‘Agnes Browne’) in the lead role alongside Donnacha Crowley (‘Kings’, ‘The Runaway’) and O Mochain himself (‘Country Man’, ‘The Court Astronomer’).

Other crew members include DoP Fionn Comerford (‘Love Eternal’), production designer Damien Byrne (‘The Standup’), sound recordist Niall O’Sullivan (‘Frank’), First A.D. Eamonn Norris (‘Grand Opening’); hair & make-up artist Caoimhe Arrigan (‘Death of a President’),; editor Ciara Brophy (‘The Crush’); composer Richie Buckley (‘The General) and producer Bernie Grummell (‘The Book That Wrote Itself’).

The festivals will also screen two other shorts by Mr O Mochain’s ‘Grand Opening’ and ‘The Tent’, which completed post production this September at Screen Scene.

‘The Red Bear’ Bound for International Film Festival of Cinematic Arts in L.A.

‘The Red Bear’, a short film about a Bosnian war photographer written and directed by DIT media graduate Ricardo Deakin, has been selected to screen at International Film Festival of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles.

The plot follows a fictitious conflict photographer during the Bosnian war of the early 90’s, who enters a perilous situation that teaches him the true cost of war.

The short was produced by Conor O’Farrell and Maximilian Ramsbottom, with other crew members including DoP Orla McNelis; art directors Amy O’Connell and Sarah McDermott; assistant director Kim Manning; editor Siubhan Smith; sound recordists Philippa Carson and Joseph Orr; and composer Stefan French.

An impressive cast features Brendan McCormack (‘Game of Thrones’), Nick Lee (‘The Fall’) and Darragh Kelly (‘Intermission’).

Further information on ‘The Red Bear’ can be found here.

‘Uisce Beatha’ headed to Raindance and DC Shorts Film Festivals

‘Uisce Beatha’, a micro-budget short made for less than €300, will screen at London’s Raindance Film Festival today Friday 4th October, following the DC Shorts film festival in Washington DC last month.

Directed by Shaun O’ Connor and produced by Aideen Wylde, the 1912 true story focuses on a young man named Tom who leaves his home in rural Ireland on the Titanic.

Lead actor Tadhg Hickey wrote the film and production took place in various locations around Cork, with Cork theatre actor Jack Healy playing Tom’s father.

‘Uisce Beatha’ previously won awards at the Cork International Film Festival and Chicago Irish Film Festival, and has screened in Boston and San Francisco.
