Award-winning Irish co-production ‘Babygirl’ is set to receive its first release in New York this Friday, October 4th.
Written and directed by Northern Irish filmmaker Macdara Vallely – who previously won acclaim at the Galway Film Fleadh and Angers European First Film Festival with his debut feature ‘Peacefire’ (2008) – ‘Babygirl’ follows a love triangle between Lena (Yainis Ynoa), her mother Lucy (Rosa Arredondo) and her mother’s latest deadbeat flame Victor (Flaco Navaja), as Lena works to expose his true nature to her mother.
Co-produced by Irish company Samson Films (‘Once’, ‘Run and Jump’), ‘Babygirl’ has already received several awards, having debuted as part of Tribeca’s Online Film Festival and received the ‘Panavision Spirit Award’ at Santa Barbara Film Festival, as well as ‘Best Irish Feature’ at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival in 2013.
Previously working under the title ‘Losing It’, the film was made for under $1 million and produced by David Collins, Paul Miller and Gigi Dement for Samson Films and Escape Pictures. Filming took place almost entirely in the Bronx borough of New York City and post-production was carried out by Screen Scene in Dublin.
Speaking about the project, director Vallely said “I’d gotten sick of the victim/passivity thing, and I wanted her [Lena] to try to fight back. And that propelled the script.”
‘Babygirl’s release will coincide with National Hispanic Heritage month in the USA, and will screen on October 4th in New York’s Quad Cinema.
