RTE Entertainment will be overseen by its new head John McHugh.
RTÉ today announced the appointment of John McHugh - Executive Producer of The Late Late Show since 2012 - to the position of Head of Entertainment, following an internal competition.

Mr McHugh previously held the position of Head of Entertainment at Channel 4 and a number of positions in entertainment commissioning at the BBC including Senior Commissioning Executive and Joint Acting Controller.

He was also Chief Executive of Tyrone Productions for five years, during which time he was executive producer on programmes including ‘The All Ireland Talent Show’ and ‘Ireland’s Greatest’.

Mr McHugh said of his new appointment: ‘I’m delighted to take on this role and work with so many talented programme makers both within RTÉ and in the independent sector. RTÉ Television’s entertainment shows are some of the most popular programmes on television in Ireland and I look forward to further developing the slate to ensure that it remains relevant and engaging.’

He began his television career in RTÉ as a researcher for five years on ‘The Late Late Show’ before working as a researcher/associate producer in LWT London.

Among the high profile programmes he had produced in Ireland and the UK are the 1995 Eurovision Song Contest; ‘Last Chance Lottery’ for Channel 4; ‘Noel’s House Party’ and ‘The Frank Skinner Show’ for BBC; ITV’s ‘Fantasy Football’ and RTÉ’s ‘Tubridy Tonight’ and ‘Gaybo’.

As Head of Entertainment, Mr McHugh will report to RTE Managing Director Glen Killane and will hold responsibility for commissioning entertainment programming for RTÉ One and RTÉ Two from both in-house and independent producers.

Mr McHugh will also have responsibility for developing entertainment content on digital platforms, working closely with RTÉ Ten.

Mr Killane added: ‘John has a proven track record in commissioning and producing engaging, high-quality entertainment programming and has an instinctive understanding of audiences. The digital landscape is an exciting backdrop for John to demonstrate his extensive creative and editorial experience and ensure that RTÉ Entertainment delivers for the evolving needs of Irish audiences’.
