Journalist Donal MacIntyre’s ‘Print and Be Damned’, a Sideline production, continues on TV3 this Thursday with a look at who controls the media and how it has been manipulated over the years to achieve political ends.
MacIntyre traces the origins of media control to such individuals as William Martin Murphy, founder of the Independent, and Eamon de Valera, founder of the Irish Press, before examining the rise of the Sunday World in the early 70s and the government’s dealings with the Sunday Independent during the 2007 election.
Sideline Productions’ Billy McGrath, series creator and executive producer, said: ‘This is the third factual documentary project we have produced for BAI and TV3 and we share their view that ‘Print and Be Damned’ will be a huge success plus educating a young TV audience on the importance and heritage of the Irish print industry.’
‘Print and be Damned’ is produced by David Malone; directed by Sarah Share; edited by Cuan Mac Chonghaill and Michael O’Sullivan; mixed by Graham Bolger and line produced by Ciara Breshihan; with Owen McArdle executive producing for TV3.
Presenter Donal MacIntyre added: ‘This has been a remarkable journey for me. The story of Irish newspapers is a mirror of the story of Ireland - a hidden history complete with twists, turns and moments that you just couldn’t make up.’
Contributors for the third episode include Eamon Dunphy, Sam Smyth, Tim Pat Coogan, Patsy McGarry, Stephen Price, Vincent Browne and Anne Harris.
‘Print and be Damned’ Episode 3 airs this Thur 22nd Aug at 9pm on TV3.
