24 Jul 2013 : By Kevin Cronin

Indian film producers, hoping to repeat the success of Dublin-shot Bollywood blockbuster ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, are location scouting in Ireland this week, on a trip organised by the Irish Film Board and Tourism Ireland.

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ has been seen by estimated 100 million cinema-goers in India, and features such highlights as a choreographed dance number filmed in Trinity College and an extended fight sequence onboard the Luas.

Earlier this week the Indian producers were shown Trinity College, Temple Bar and given a set tour of at Ashford Films in Wicklow, where season two of ‘Vikings’ is currently being filmed.

The film representatives present on the trip include Kulmeet Makkar, the Film and Television Producers Guild of India Ltd; Vikesh Bhutani, Excel Entertainment; Huzan Fraser, Tourism Ireland India; Sarita Patil, Balaji Telefilms; and Mitali Mahajan, Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt Ltd; and Amar Butala, UTV Motion Pictures, the film-unit of Disney-UTV.

Tourism Ireland’s chief executive Niall Gibbons said: ‘Bollywood is deep-rooted in the psyche of most Indians and in Indian communities across the world, and the films have a considerable influence on Indian travellers when they are deciding on their holiday destination. We are delighted to have co-operated with the Irish Film Board and Northern Ireland Screen, to secure the visit of these influential Bollywood producers and directors for Ireland.’

The full itinerary, designed by Fáilte Ireland and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, includes visits to St Stephen’s Green, Dublin Castle, Trinity College, Temple Bar, the Ha’penny Bridge); West of Ireland locations (Ashford Castle, the Cliffs of Moher, Kenmare and the Dingle Peninsula); and Northern Ireland locations (including Titanic Belfast, the Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge and Dunluce Castle).

‘Ek Tha Tiger’, starring Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, tells the story of a Trinity College scientist suspected of selling missile technology secrets to Pakistan, which kickstarts an adventure leading from Dublin to Istanbul, Kazakhstan and Chile..

The film was executive produced by Brendan McCarthy and John McDonnell of Fantastic Films, and shot in Dublin over five weeks in Autumn 2011.

Belfast's Causeway Pictures also recently wrapped filming on Indian blockbuster ‘1 Nenokkadine', which was filmed on location in Northern Ireland.

The Luas-based fight sequence in 'Ek Tha Tiger', which has to be seen to be believed, is available to view below:
